Abandoned Treasures
Painting to Document the Historical Architectures
Both from America and China
Dongfeng Li
Professor of Art - Morehead State University
“I want to present oil painting that captures historical buildings that have been ignored or even destroyed by modern society in both my motherland province in China and in my resident country of the U.S. I especially like to focus on buildings over a century old and highlight their architecture and tragic fate.
The goal is to capture their currently collapsed body trying to still shine with their former glory and beauty. The juxtaposition between the Eastern and Western styles of architecture is another key aspect of my research goal as it would highlight both the differences and similarities of culture and unique histories of the two different regions.
In this endeavor, I am also trying to focus on new approaches to oil painting techniques in the depiction of architecture and related landscapes. I would explore experimental oil painting by using a mixture of abstraction and representation techniques and using ambiguity and obscurity in the form of blurred/interlocking shapes. In addition. I hope that the paintings will take the opportunity to juxtapose the cultures of both East and the West.”
